Finding a proper diet when it comes to gout is more difficult than ever before. There are so many foods out there and most of them look perfectly delicious. But, you should not consume all of them.
It is mandatory to divide the foods into two main categories. The first one is a positive group and here you can find all the foods that don’t have any effect on gout or have only positive effects. Yes, even no-effect food on gout is better than the one from a second group.
The second group are foods that have a negative effect on gout. They can either increase uric acid levels, they can cause gout attack or increase the risk from it. In general, all foods that can make gout attack happens must be avoided.
What about gout and fruit? This is probably the hardest category or type to explain. In general, the fruits are good for gout sufferers but not all fruits. This is something I must explain furthermore.
What fruit is good for gout?
The best examples are cherries, berries, apples, pineapple, and even bananas. The best way is to eat all of these fruits in raw form, it is the most productive method of intake.
You can also drink juice made from these fruits or eat them in dried form but the number of benefits are limited or at least decreased.
There are two groups when it comes to fruits. The first group fruits should be consumed. First of all, fruit is generally rich in fiber and it is one ingredient gout patients do need.

Fiber can help you empty the bowels quicker than usual, decrease the sugar levels and all in combined, decrease the risk from a gout attack. Fruits are also rich in vitamin C which is mandatory vitamin all gout patients do need.

Fruit contains phytonutrients as well. These compounds are effective in preventing cancer and developing a chronic disease such as gout. Some fruits are better than the others and probably berries have the main role here.

Berries are also an excellent choice. Yes, you can consume them as well and in any amount you like. My favourite type of berries are blueberries which are also in antioxidants and they fight inflammation perfectly.

3. Citrus fruits
All citrus fruits like lemons, oranges and also grapefruits are OK. They contain high levels of vitamin C we do need, however oranges contain high amount of fructose so eat them in moderation.

Apples have ingredients that help fight of inflammation, precisely what we do need.

Papaya have interesting enzymes that will help the body with maintaining its alkalinity and also decrease the level of uric acid. It is also rich in a compound known as papain. This compound has great anti-inflammatory properties and helps our body maintain an alkaline state.

Pineapples will promote blood flow, hence decrease the levels of uric acid in the actual joints and help them recover quicker. This is possible thanks to a compound known as bromelain (mostly present in the steam).

Artichokes are great for gout sufferers. This fruit contains chemicals and compounds that control and regulate the production of this acid. The second reason is the presence of fiber and vitamin C.

Bananas are known to decrease the levels of uric acid, therefore they will literally decrease the risk of a gout attack. That’s why they are an essential part of a diet and they should be taken into account for all of us, gout sufferers.

Which fruit should we avoid with gout?
Other fruits with high oxalate values should be avoided. They can transform the calcium in the kidneys into kidney stones. Your kidney function will be decreased and uric acid won’t be properly removed from the body. Fruits of this caliber include mangoes, kiwi, peaches, and apricots.
I must add that the bad fruits can be consumed but in moderation and very small amounts.
