I constantly try to find new foods and ways to help gout sufferers prevent a new gout attack and help those who don’t have it, to never get it. It has been an interesting and complicated manner but there are a lot of things I have learned during a long period of time.
The goal when suffering from gout is to avoid foods that can spike uric acid. This is done by simply eating low-purines foods or those that can actually decrease the uric acid.
There are a lot of foods like this and there are a lot of meals you can eat and still enjoy. But, today I am more interested in one particular relationship. It is the link between hummus and gout.
What is hummus actually?
Hummus is a dip and spread food that comes from the Middle East. It is delicious and it is generally very healthy. After all, it is made from natural ingredients and there are no presence of processed foods or artificial ingredients.
Traditional hummus is made from garbanzo beans (chickpeas), sesame seeds, lemon juice, garlic, and olive oil. When all the ingredients are combined, we get a delicious dip that is commonly consumed by vegans and vegetarians.
There is a link between hummus and gout and I will explain this more later on. At the moment, I can tell that hummus comes with plenty of natural ingredients that are healthy, and the entire food is considered to be one of the healthiest on the planet.
100 grams of hummus contain 166 calories, 7.9 grams of protein, and 14.3 grams of carbs. It is also loaded with iron, zinc, vitamin B6 and potassium among other minerals.

Hummus is also rich in fiber and it is known to promote gut health and growth of healthy bacteria inside. 100 grams of hummus will provide 24% of daily need for fiber in women and 16% for men.

What about hummus and gout?
I am proud to say that you can mix and match hummus and gout and the link is more important than you may believe. In the essence, hummus is used to decrease inflammation. We all know that gout is an inflammatory disease.
This benefit comes from two main ingredients. The first is olive oil which is known to have powerful anti-inflammatory properties and it can be used for chronic inflammation such as gout. This is possible thanks to high level of antioxidants found in olive oil.

The next best ingredient here is tahini found in sesame seeds. This actually decreases the count of markers such as IL6 and CRP which are increased and more present during a gout attack.
Hummus can also decrease other inflammatory markers in the blood which all are increased during a flare, gout causes. In fact, there were several studies that proved this claim and all ended up with the same result.
Hummus and gout are also linked indirectly. Hummus can help you lose weight, improve the sugar level in the body, and can promote heart health.

How to consume hummus if you suffer from gout?
First of all, there are countless hummus recipes out there and not all are ideal. Keep in mind that I already recommended the best recipe at the beginning and this applies to traditional hummus. It is the best option and the one we, gout sufferers do need. The ingredients include garbanzo beans (chickpeas), sesame seeds, lemon juice, garlic and olive oil.
What you need most, if you are making another type of hummus, you should use olive oil and sesame seeds. These two have a wonderful effect, positive of course on gout, and can decrease inflammation and help you recover quickly from a gout flare.
If possible, look for the hummus I mentioned or make one for yourself. It is an extremely easy task. Just blend all the ingredients in a food blender and you are done. You can make as much as you like within 20 minutes. By adding this food to your diet, you can expect better health and you will be more protected from pain. As such, hummus and gout are connected and have an amazing symbiosis I like. The best part is the fact you can eat it every single day.
