Fat is the ultimate source of energy for our bodies and it also helps them transport vitamins such as A, D, E and K. But, there are several types of fat and too much of it is definitely something to avoid. All you will know by now is that yes, fat and gout are linked indeed.

Did you know that there are several types of fat?

Most of you will believe that there is just one type of fat, but actually, there are several types. I will explain and include several types which are simply the most common. In general, all of them can be divided into bad and good fats.

The first type is a bad type of fat known as saturated fat. It is a common ingredient in the red meat, chicken, butter and dairy products. This type of fat is so bad that it will affect your overall health and can cause severe diseases such as heart attack, type 2 diabetes and etc. It also has a negative effect on the body weight, so it will increase which brings us to a lot of other, more complicated diseases and complications as well.

Trans fat is the second type of a bad fat on the list. This type is present in processed foods. Basically, the fat helps the food stay preserved and allows for the manufacturers to process it. As such, it is a bad type of fat which also causes type 2 diabetes and can increase your weight. This is known as a more complicated type of fat which increases the LDL or bad cholesterol and decreases HDL or good cholesterol in the body.

What about good fats?

Yes, there are good fats as well. Almost all of them are unsaturated and they can be found in salmon, fish in general, walnuts, seeds and etc. These fats are safe to consume and they will generally increase the levels of the HDL or good cholesterol and decrease the level of bad cholesterol. The salmon fat is more than just desirable because it is also rich in omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. They have so many benefits on the brain function.

Monounsaturated fats are great as well. They are a bit rare to find and they are present in some nuts and seeds. The main benefits are almost identical to the previous type of fat, so you get a decrease of LDL cholesterol and increase of HDL cholesterol.

For us, gout sufferers fish is the best thing to consume. They are rich in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids which are known to fight inflammation and fight gout. I personally recommend consuming up to 10% or 200 calories per a day as fat only. This is the best thing you can do in order to decrease the risk of a gout attack and to get a better, overall health.

Gout diet and fat

Here I must explain that fat is a huge issue for us, gout sufferers. Basically you will have more weight, obviously and you will have a higher level of uric acid. Overweight people also have some issues with insulin and with kidney function. All of this means that those who are obese or overweight are at a higher risk of developing gout or a gout attack. This actually has been confirmed by a research conducted in the United States, so yes, the link between fat and gout is obvious.

Another study that was conducted in 2015 discovered that belly fat is a huge issue for gout sufferers as well. Basically, this type of fat increases the odds of becoming a gout sufferer or having regular attacks. The study discovered that people who have big bellies have 47.4% to develop gout, compared to 27% of those who have flat bellies. In addition, they are also at a higher risk of getting metabolic syndrome, 31% compared to 13%.

Saturated fat

So, now we know that fat is linked with gout and it is essential to remember that unsaturated fat is the best option. Saturated fat is just another word for severe issues that can cause a lot of problems regarding your weight and gout of course. We also know that fat from fish meat, seeds, and nuts is the best type of fat and it should be consumed plenty. As I have mentioned earlier, 10% of your daily intake of calories should be based on fat, a good fat. This means that 200 calories should come from fat. Keep in mind that I believe 2000 calories per a day is an excellent diet that comes with many benefits and health advantages.

Once again, no, this 10 % of fat must not come from bad fat sources I have mentioned above. They must come from good sources like fish, nuts and avocado.

The final word

As you can see, fat and gout are linked indeed, but they can be managed perfectly if you know which sources of fat are good and which ones should be consumed. In general, good fat will decrease bad cholesterol, increase good cholesterol and reduce the risk of developing gout. On the other hand, it doesn’t have any disadvantages. Bad fat has only drawbacks, so I want to advise you to skip consuming red meat, butter and dairy product that contain any of the bad fats there are. You and your body can live without it without a problem.
