Gout Ice Packs – Can Ice Alleviate Gout Pain?

Gout Ice Packs

Gout flares are painful, and you can never predict when they will turn up problems. Patients with gout attacks also complain of itching and burning sensations in their joints. Swelling and painful joints with redness are really the source of discomfort. What will you do to alleviate this condition? Should you use gout ice packs?

The uric acid buildups in joints are the major factors causing gout and severe pain. The condition is so painful that a slight touch on the joint will make you feel the ache. Now, the question is- Can ice packs be effective in treating gout?

Application of ice cubes to treat gout

There are several controversies regarding the effectiveness of gout ice packs. However, some clinical studies have revealed that cold therapy with ice cubes works well in alleviating your gout pain. Several gout patients have found noticeable results from using the ice cubes. But, they have also taken medications like prednisone and colchicine.

How will you create your gout ice packs? You can take a plastic bag and put some ice cubes into it. Then, wrap the bag in a thin towel and apply it over the affected part for 20 minutes. You must do it 3 to 4 times every day with a gap of 1 to 2 hours. It is the best way to have cold compression therapy at your home to relieve pain and swelling problems of your joints.

When you feel that the pain has become intense, you can try out gout ice packs. But, do not think that ice packs are the remedy to your gout and uric acid. Instead, you can choose them to reduce the intensity of pain and swelling- the major symptoms of gout.

Is hot water as effective as cold water for gout treatment?

You have already understood that ice packs and cold water are the safest options for reducing gout pain. However, you may also soak the affected part in hot water. Make sure that your inflammation is not intense while using the hot water.

Researchers have claimed that hot water can dissolve the urate crystals. Thus, with the regular use of hot water, you can reduce the urate concentration. There will be no formation of crystals as you continue the treatment.

Some patients have found results by using both hot and cold compression techniques. They have applied the hot compress for 3 minutes and switched to a cold compress for around 30 seconds. By doing it repeatedly, you will get positive results after a few days.

Conclusion

It can be concluded that both gout ice packs and hot water are the safest options for patients to reduce pain. However, they must take medicines like ibuprofen. Do not take aspirin, as it can make the condition more complicated.

Consult your physician to take an anti-inflammatory medication. Moreover, you have to eat the right foods to reduce uric acid crystals. Foods with a high level of purine are risky for your gout.
