Legumes and Gout – Are Legumes Bad for Gout?

legumes and gout

The best thing a gout sufferer can do is to manage his or her diet properly. What this means is that you have to consume foods that do not affect uric acid, are low in purines, and if possible decrease the uric acid level inside a body.

Good thing is that there are a lot of foods like this. A bad thing is that not all are beneficial and you need to know details and specifics. I have decided to help you with this matter and I will analyze as many foods as I can.

The topic for today is legumes and gout. For some of you this is a well-known topic. For others, it is completely unknown. In the post below I will explore and discuss the link between the two terms.

Legumes – Basics

First and foremost, legume is not a single plant. It actually refers to the family of plants that produce pods with the seeds inside them. The legume is a term used to describe the seeds of the plants.

The most common legumes include peanuts, soybeans, peas, lentils, and chickpeas. Obviously, they vary in their compounds and the nutrients they contain. I will try to generalize a matter slightly and present you with the basics.

1 cup of legumes (cooked lentils) measures 198 grams. It will contain 230 calories, 18 grams of protein, 16 grams of fiber, 40 grams of carbs, iron, folate, potassium, and magnesium.

In essence, you get plenty of protein and fiber which are two things all gout patients need more. If you recall I have mentioned occasionally that protein-based diet is the best for us.

Legumes are beneficial for people who want to lower their high blood pressure. People who want to protect the heart will benefit as well alongside those who simply want minerals and vitamins.

All of this brings us to the link between legumes and gout. It will be a simple explanation that I will cover in detail below.

Are legumes bad for gout?

No, I recommend you to consume legumes and yes, you can consume them daily. Legumes and gout can coexist in the same person and there are no drawbacks of any kind.

The main reason for this claim is the low purine count found in legumes. They are also beneficial due to the fact, they do not spike uric acid. As a matter of fact, they don’t have any effect on it.

Legumes and also beans are a better source of protein than meat. You get clean protein and you won’t get fat found in the meat. This is another benefit. Furthermore, processed meat may be loaded with artificial chemicals and additives while legumes won’t.

Legumes are actually one of the safest foods gout sufferers can consume. Other foods include sweet potatoes, fat-free dairy, whole grains, quinoa, and obviously fruits and veggies.

There is no direct benefit between legumes and gout. I am trying to say that you can consume legumes, but don’t expect to protect yourself from a gout attack. Lower uric acid or anything similar. They are neutral food.

Are there any limits?

No, there are no limits. You can consume legumes on a daily basis and as often as you like. There won’t be any side effects and you won’t be affected in any way.

The best thing you can do is to pair legumes with other, also healthy foods for gout patients. By doing this simple trick, you can get all the protein and nutrients you need but you won’t be in touch with harmful chemicals or compounds.

The only thing you should keep your eye on is the fact legumes may be paired with foods gout patients must avoid. The best example is organ meat, turkey, and similar meats. Legumes won’t make those foods safe for us.
