Gout is a certain type of arthritis, meaning it will affect your joints and can cause inflammation and pains. It is similar to osteoarthritis from some points of view, yet there are many differences between the two. The problem is there is no such thing as a treatment to heal it.
The best thing you can do is keep gout under control. Reach to a doctor and they will tell you to watch your weight, exercise and eat healthy food. Moreover, you will be given painkillers to keep the affection under control.
Gout is caused by too much uric acid in the blood. Since it cannot be cured, I thought tackling the cause will be the optimal solution to ameliorate it. In other words, reducing the uric acid would do the trick. Too much of it will cause inflammation, painful sensations and pain.
I have to be honest with you – painkillers do help, but do you really want to bomb your body with a bunch of chemicals every single day? Because yes, gout attacks will occur more and more often and they will also gain in intensity.
Gout and milk thistle might be the option to overcome this problem or at least one of the naturist approaches to get over it.
What is milk thistle?
Milk thistle is a plant. It has purple flowers and pale leaves. However, you do not need any of these. Instead, you have to focus on the seeds. It is extremely popular in Europe, but it is also sold in other parts of the world – whether natural or in supplements.
When buying supplements for gout, you will often see milk thistle among the ingredients. The plant is considered to be a medicinal element and has been used in traditional medicine for hundreds of years.
There are not too many research studies concluding the effects of milk thistle, but I thought – well, it is natural, it has no side effects, so it is worth a try. I found two studies on rats that showed how milk thistle can reduce the levels of uric acid, hence its popularity in supplements.
What does milk thistle do?
So, how does this natural approach work after all? Normally, it is better known for helping the liver work properly. It is a common solution for those with liver related diseases. It also boosts the cardiovascular system, lowers the cholesterol and helps people with diabetes.
What really drew my attention was a flavonoid. Known as silymarin, this flavonoid is excellent as an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. As an antioxidant, it boosts the liver, but it also strengthens its activity and reduces the levels of uric acid.
Are there any restrictions?
I did bring in a series of natural ingredients to help with gout – from olive oil and basil to green tea and chamomile. They are all good, but there is something about gout and milk thistle – it works on your liver. In other words, it may interact with certain medications, so it is always a good idea to consult a doctor before getting a supplement.

Gout and milk thistle, effects and treatment
There were no obvious signs of improvement within the first four or five weeks. After a couple of months, I could tell that my gout attacks were lower in intensity. There were times when I did not even touch my painkillers.
Furthermore, instead of having six or seven attacks a week, I barely had four or five of them and they were all manageable.
How to use milk thistle for gout?
You can find plenty of supplements based on milk thistle over the Internet – opt for something organic. You can also consume it as a tea, while the seeds can be thrown around salads or to garnish all kinds of fishes.
