Gout and Dandelion – Is Dandelion Tea Good for Gout?

dandelion and gout

The first thing you will think of when I say dandelion is your lawn. After all, this plant grows in your yard and there is no way to eliminate it. But, there is a second, a completely opposite story of this plant and now I will tell you a story.

Dandelion is a powerful herb that has been used in medicine for decades. It is also used in cooking and in various cuisines all around the globe. This plant is considered to have dozens of benefits we all need at some point.

The plant here is popular all over the globe and it is used in native medicines for treating various conditions. Of course, my primary mission is to find a correlation between gout and dandelion and yes, there are countless of them.

Compounds and nutrients in dandelion

Dandelion has been used in medicine thanks to its composition. This herb is rich with various vitamins such as D, B and C. An interesting fact is that it does contain beta-carotene, but in larger amounts than carrots! Beta-carotene is converted into vitamin A when it reaches the body.

Other ingredients you can find in dandelion are iron, phosphorus, biotin, fiber, zinc, and potassium alongside magnesium. It sounds perfect and it looks like herb we all need.

The actual benefits of dandelion are impressive and I don’t have the time to mention all of them. Some of the most important include the ability to boost the effects of the immune system, to promote digestion and also eliminate toxins.

Additional benefits include the ability to work as a mild laxative, to control the insulin levels and also to decrease the blood pressure and cholesterol. In some countries such as Germany, it is used for treating urinary tract infections as well.

Gout and dandelion

I found out that dandelion can be used for treating gout. As a matter of fact, it has been used in Indian and Chinese medicine for centuries for this purpose. Keep in mind that the only root of the plant should be used for this purpose!

What I must reveal to you is that dandelion is used as a diuretic. It boosts the urination meaning the uric acid levels will be significantly decreased within hours. This is precisely what you do need during a gout attack.

Dandelion has effects on the gout in multiple ways. It also decreases the inflammation and the pain and swelling thanks to its composition, which includes phytonutrients and fatty acids.

I can add that dandelion has effects on kidneys and their ability to clean salt, excess water and waste and can decrease the risk of kidney stones. Some patients even eliminated the need for kidney stone surgery.

How you can use dandelion to treat gout

I personally believe that most of you will like consuming dandelion leaves in raw form in a salad or as an addition to the lunch. I prefer in raw form simply because the vitamins and healthy nutrients will stay untouched. You can also consume it in cooked form.

When you consume it in raw form, the vitamin C, which is needed to decrease the level of uric acid won’t be affected by the preparation process, so you will get more than needed amounts of it.

Is dandelion tea good for gout?

Another, the popular and appealing method is to drink dandelion tea 2 times per day. It will make sure your kidneys work perfectly. For those of you who are making their own tea, do not use dandelion present in your backyard.

You will need to get dandelion on a mountain or some isolated place to make sure it is organic, free from artificial chemicals and any pollutants. It is a mandatory fact so keep that in mind.

Where to get dandelion?

There are other ways for how you can consume dandelion. One of them is to use supplements and dietary additions to your meals. You can choose between pills, tablets and so much more. There are countless options out there.

The bottom line is that gout and dandelion should coexist. Even better, you should include this herb to your diet as soon as possible. It is so easy to find, use and it offers impressive benefits, something I cannot say for most other herbs available locally.
