Aspirin and Gout – Is Aspirin a Good Pain Reliever for Gout?

aspirin and gout

Aspirin is one of the most common drugs people use nowadays and it is one of the most popular ones when it comes to a variety of issues. It is known that aspirin will prevent a heart attack, it will help you with pain, headache and it will also reduce inflammation. So, all of this means that aspirin and gout can be mixed together, so a gout sufferer can use aspirin to treat a gout attack or some other issue.

Many others believe that taking aspirin on a daily basis is a wonderful way to prevent future gout attacks and to get the safety you all want. The main thing to know here is that aspirin must be avoided if you suffer from gout. This isn’t a medication you will want to use for treating any of the mentioned issues.

Aspirin and gout

Conventional, 325 mg aspirin must be avoided at all cost. Because it will elevate the uric acid levels, the risk of a gout attack is much higher. On the other hand, if you take it while you have an attack, the situation will get even worse, much worse, so this is a matter that must be avoided.

But, aspirin and gout are common questions among us, gout sufferers. After all, this medication is known to reduce the risk of heart attack or other cardiovascular issues, which as we all know are more common for gout sufferers.

Baby aspirin for gout

So, what we can do? There is only one alternative. Taking baby aspirin or 75 mg tablet is possible. First of all, you will have to get a consultation with your doctor and get a better idea regarding this matter. Then you will have to know that the maximum dosage is 81 mg per a day, so never take more than that.

The possibility is enabled due to the fact these small tablets won’t raise uric acid significantly. The elevation isn’t even noticed in some cases and even if it is, the level is still too low in order to get you a gout attack or any other related issue.

Aspirin and studies

I must say that there was a study back in 2014 which discovered the fact I explained. However, doctors and experts from all over the world are still skeptical regarding the matter and opinions are mixed in the lack of a better word. So, it is up to you to decide are you going to try with taking small dosages of aspirin in order to get some of its benefits.

Another, interesting fact regarding this medication is that high, extremely high dosages are known to block the uric acid and promote its elimination. The effect is more than just important, but it happens only when aspirin is consumed in massive amounts. As such, this is a delicate matter. Keep in mind that you will have to ask your doctor for approval before you start taking the high dosage. It is common for a doctor to prescribe aspirin to a person who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, but this matter cannot be generalized.

If all of this is still new for you, keep in mind that you can start slowly. Start with a baby aspirin and do not increase the dosage! I know, most of you believed that dosage should be increased gradually, but this isn’t the case here. You should keep it as minimal as possible. Also, remember that aspirin won’t treat gout, but it will protect you from other issues and protect your cardiovascular system.

Conclusion

Aspirin and gout are complicated to explain when mixed together. In essence, aspirin isn’t a drug which should be used by gout sufferers. It won’t help you with pain and in the worst case scenario, it can make the situation even worse. What is also important is to know that only the smallest dosages are possible to take into account. On the other hand, extremely high dosages can be useful, but there is no plenty of research regarding this claim.
